“Is he okay?”

“He’s kicking himself,” responded Jennifer. From where I sat, that was exactly what it looked like. The jovial Clay we had seen the night before was now sitting alone all by himself at the other end of our roof top deck. His head dropped down at the end of his neck. His hands alternated from holding his head up, to making frustrated passes through his hair, and at times even gripping full handfuls and yanking.

That kind of loss-of-control was something I had never personally experienced, and the fact the smell of Tera’s blood didn’t even faze me had to be because of my age. Right after Clay was handled, I saw Pam and Mike excuse themselves, and Jeremy followed. Though the others stayed, it didn’t take a genius to notice everyone except me kept their distance until she went to get cleaned up. It was true, I smelled it. Its metallic scent was unmistakable, but nothing stirred. I even walked over with a napkin for her to wrap around her finger. Clay was a newborn, and Mr. Bolden said he didn’t stand a chance. Even with it just being a single drop of blood caused by the hook on a Christmas ornament.

“He will get over it. It takes a while to gain control over it,” Jennifer added.

“Maybe someone should talk to him.”

“Kevin did after he brought him back upstairs. He explained to him it wasn’t his fault, which it wasn’t, and he even told him not to feel guilty about it, but you know…”

We both said in unison, “when someone tells you not to feel guilty you will.” Damn those suggestions that sneak into your damaged psyche and twist all around. Just like being told not to be nervous about something.

There was another two handfuls of blonde hair. “I think maybe I should,” I said.

Jennifer looked back in his direction and remarked, “Probably not a bad idea for someone to talk to him before he goes bald.” I stood up and started, but she grabbed my elbow lightly. “Just keep it simple. Remember what he has been through. His experiences are different than yours, so you might not understand. That is something you need to always remember when handling someone new.”

At first, I thought this was a warning, and an odd one at that, but then it clicked, and I looked down at her. “Training?”

She smiled. “Think of it as your first lesson, but I think you will be a natural.”

I wasn’t about to admit I had doubts in that as I walked over toward Clay. Add on to it the suspicion that Jennifer might be watching, evaluating, and that frog in my throat went from tadpole to full sized toad in about twenty steps. By the time I sat down on the chair across from Clay, I felt it might evolve into a something even larger, causing a quick swallow to try to discard whatever it was. “Clay,” I croaked.

He didn’t look up, but his hands paused on their way back through his hair again.
